To help raise funds Virginia Pale-Parsons will run a 10K race every month for a year, with the final race taking place on Saturday 14th July 2018. “10K? That’s no marathon!” we hear you say. Therefore Virginia will work her legs off to improve her time by a minute per race. Her last 10K was a very average 58″18, so the aim is to run the final 10K in 46″18 or less.
Virginia has signed up to a few races and will update her mydonate page as she registers for new ones:
Bushy Park – 20/08
Henley Thames Path Challenge – 10/09
Henley Bridge Rotary – 08/10
Chessington Running Wild – 04/11
Dec – TBC
Jan – TBC
Feb – TBC
Mar – TBC
Apr – TBC
Vitality London – 28/05
Jun – TBC
July – TBC
Why is she doing this:
On the 14th July 2018 it will be 10 years since Catherine Parsons passed away. To mark the anniversary Virginia wants to raise money for a charity Catherine would have supported had she still been with us (rather than a charity that reminds her family of the reason why she isn’t with us anymore). The charity chosen on her behalf is Home-Start Spelthorne. Catherine received help from her local Home-Start and often gifted items and supported them in return. To help raise funds Virginia will be running a series of 10Ks over the next year.
All offers of support, large or small, are welcome. Even the smallest amount can help enrich the life of a family:
£10 covers a volunteer’s expenses for a month
£30 provides support for a family for a month
£400 provides annual safeguarding training for their volunteers
£1250 supports a family with a home-visiting volunteer for a year
£2500 funds one local training course for 10-12 volunteers to support families that need their help
It would be wonderful if you could donate towards this great cause. Catherine would have loved knowing that she made a difference to a child’s life. A perfect way to celebrate her and keep Virginia fit!
The last year has brought many challenges, particularly on the financial side. Thankfully our tender from Surrey County Council has been extended through to December 2017. But we are still left with a large funding shortfall. Our target for 2017/18 is £26,000 and any new fundraising ideas will be very gratefully received.
During 2016/17, amazingly just under £26,000 has been raised through various fundraising activities and grant applications. We thank all our supporters and friends for their kind donations and for their wonderful support.
As usual the summer months have been busy with fundraising events and donations from our wonderful supporters. We continue to raise our profile in the local community at every possible opportunity.
This year we have been lucky enough to establish a good relationship with Sunbury Village WI and they recently donated £100 plus items for us to sell. Our display stands have been in TESCO Ashford, the Elmsleigh Centre, Staines and at the recent Shepperton Rotary Charity Fair. Nicky attended a recent Job Fair organised by Staines Job Centre. These events have given us the opportunity to talk to lots of people about Home-Start and to encourage their support and to pass on information.
We are grateful to all our volunteers who have helped deliver leaflets door to door, this generated several enquiries…but there are always plenty more leaflets to deliver!!
We are looking for volunteers to participate in/help out at events, check our website calendar for more details on the following:
Thursday 7th September 8 am – Kempton Market
Saturday 7th October – Table Top Sale, Shepperton Village Hall
We thank our principal funders Surrey County Council, Spelthorne Borough Council, NW Surrey Clinical Commissioning Group, BBC Children in Need, Community Foundation for Surrey – Parkes Fund, Shepperton Parish Charity, Four Acres Trust and many other people and organisations. The full list can be seen in the Annual Report. Follow this link to see our Annual report 2016-2017 with an up-to-date list.
The End of the Financial Year 2016-2017

As you can see from the above statistics, it has been another busy year for Home-Start Spelthorne. Families have received emotional and practical support from our wonderful team of home-visiting volunteers. A number of referrals have also been received from other health professionals, Sure-Start Children’s Centres, schools, nursery nurses, social care and parents themselves.
Our Chairperson, Beth Scott, and Treasurer, Anne Damerell, have had a particularly busy year attending monthly meetings at Home-Start Surrey to discuss and monitor the contract with Surrey County Council. Each scheme provides data and case studies as evidence of the work we do and the impact we have on families as part of the Early Help strategy. The eight Surrey schemes have also been working together on funding, promotion and advertising.
